Why Successful Business Owners Start Planning Before the New Year

Around this time of year, business owners often start telling me the same thing.

By Lietta Erni  ·  12 August 2026

Over the years, I’ve noticed something interesting.

Around this time of year, business owners often start telling me the same thing.

“Next year is going to be different.”

They’ve got exciting ideas, new goals and a genuine desire to grow their business. They’re motivated and ready for a fresh start.

The challenge is that by January, life has usually taken over. The phone starts ringing, emails pile up, the team needs support and those exciting plans get pushed further and further down the list.

This week, I found myself having exactly this conversation with one of my clients.

We weren’t talking about setting bigger goals. We were talking about creating more clarity.

Because when you know what matters most, making decisions becomes easier and taking action feels far less overwhelming.

At Gernius, we believe planning doesn’t begin when the calendar changes.

It begins before the year ends.

The businesses that move confidently into a new year aren’t scrambling to work out what they want to achieve. They’ve already taken the time to reflect, learn and prepare.

Start by Looking Back

Before setting new goals, take a moment to look at the year that’s been.

Ask yourself:

  • What worked well?
  • What challenged me?
  • What am I most proud of?
  • What would I do differently?
  • What do I want more of next year?
  • What do I need to let go of?

Reflection creates clarity.

And clarity creates better decisions.

Focus on What Matters Most

One of the biggest productivity killers isn’t a lack of time—it’s trying to do everything at once.

Instead of creating a long list of goals, identify the few things that will make the biggest difference to your business.

Ask yourself:

If I could only achieve three things next year, what would they be?

Those priorities become your compass. They help you make decisions, stay focused and avoid getting distracted by things that don’t move you forward.

Don’t Just Set Goals—Create a Plan

Goals without action are simply good intentions.

Break each priority into practical steps.

Ask yourself:

  • What needs to happen in the next 90 days?
  • Who can support me?
  • What resources do I need?
  • What obstacles might get in my way?

The clearer your plan, the easier it becomes to take action.

Become the Business Owner Your Plan Needs

One thing I often explore with clients is that achieving a goal isn’t just about what you need to do.

It’s also about who you need to become.

As you plan for the year ahead, ask yourself:

  • What habits do I need to strengthen?
  • What conversations have I been avoiding?
  • What decisions do I need to make?
  • What support do I need around me?

Extraordinary results come from the combination of a clear plan and the person willing to put it into action.

Remember Why You Started

It’s easy to become so focused on growing your business that you forget why you started it in the first place.

Your business should support the life you want to create—not the other way around.

As you plan for the year ahead, don’t just think about turnover, marketing or growth.

Think about what success looks like for you.

Maybe it’s having more time with your family.

Maybe it’s taking a proper holiday.

Maybe it’s building a stronger team or creating more balance.

Extraordinary results look different for everyone.

The important thing is that you’re creating a business that supports the life you want to live.

Planning Creates Confidence

Planning won’t remove every challenge that comes your way.

But it will give you direction.

When you know where you’re heading, decisions become easier, opportunities become clearer and you’re less likely to be pulled off course by every new idea that comes along.

At Gernius, we come alongside business owners to uncover new possibilities, challenge their perspective and create practical strategies that turn ideas into action.

Because extraordinary results don’t come from doing more.

They come from focusing on what matters most with clarity, confidence and purpose.

If you’re already thinking about next year, don’t wait until January to start planning.

The best time to create clarity is now.
